The Naruto series rarely has long gaps of happiness, which I why I attribute this song, which revolves around small moments that are the most precious of all during and after those changing moments in Wave: Sakura’s later growth of opinion in Naruto, Sasuke’s acceptance of Sakura’s abilities and trust in Naruto (it was just…expected, that Naruto would last long enough through the Chunnin exams to fight Sasuke), Kakashi's pride in them and his inability to keep himself from emotionally attaching himself, and Naruto’s love for them all.

Sakura loves her team!
Kakashi does not kill his team or run over Sasuke and Naruto with a lawn mower, insinuating his love for his team!
Naruto grumbles he kinda sorta maybe likes his team AND IF YOU LAY A FINGER ON THEM HE'LL KILL YOU FOR HIS TEAM.
Sasuke stares at you until you go away, and then he takes his place with his team.

Itachi completely mind-fucking Sasuke, and then it all spins out of control.

Combination of memories at Valley of the End between Naruto and Sasuke, and Naruto and Sakura taking their silent vows to never fail again.

(A/N: Naruto...I always thought it was odd he tried so hard to keep Sasuke in Konoha, and then picked up and left Sakura behind to trail off with Jiraiya but whatever... )

The damage of one promise. They're all a bunch of messed up kids in war...and yet Sakura, Naruto, Kakashi, and Sasuke fascinate me a little because of these itty bitty pieces of innocence they still have the rest of the cast doesn't. Sakura desperately wanting to be thirteen again with a family that loved her back, but be strong enough; Kakashi where he could fix Obito through Team Seven, Naruto just outshining everyone, and Sasuke clinging to the eight-year old philosophy that he can get his family's love, Itachi's approval, and Itachi's death all in one stone throw.

There’s Naruto’s sort of explanation to people like Konohamaru who don’t understand.

Then there’s Naruto training through sweat, anger, and Sasuke; and Sakura clutches the photo tightly.

They set out for Akatsuki.
And the battles begin…

With the fight against Akatsuki people die. People are lost.

Well, Naruto was trying to shake him as he demanded an answer, but along with losing facial expression Sasuke also lost involuntary movement. But he didn’t tell Naruto to stop touching him either.

”Shh.” Kakashi said to Hinata lazily. Well, if you can after reinstalling your only good eye and blood all over your hands. Kakashi’s weird like that.

Naruto’s eye was twitching and he snarled like a wildcat, “I DON’T HEAR HAPPY!”

Sakura bit her lip. They’re all bloody and torn and tired, Sasuke-kun and Naruto the most, but you wouldn’t ever know it whenever they’re eyes met with that ever-present intensity. She stepped forward from a clueless Suigetsu, “Sasuke-kun…”

The blond’s temper went up a notch as he heard his Sakura-chan’s voice.

“…” Sasuke watched Naruto boil silently as the jinjurinki glared up at him.

“You bastard,” Naruto said. “Don’t…”

I need you, but…
Don’t make me beg.

There was more silence.

Then, “Usuratonkachi.”

Sakura’s heart took wings and a grin broke out.

“I don’t get it,” Suigetsu was saying to Juugo, who shrugged and suggested they just go with it.

"Inside joke," Sai said happily as he snapped a Kodak picture. "Sniff--I just love happy endings!"

* And Naruto wanted to dance on Madara's grave, before Sasuke blew that to the moon too.

He left because he wanted to protect them from himself, his ghosts, and Itachi.

Something starts to relax, that hasn’t since Kakashi-sensei said he might start to like them; since Sasuke lugged Naruto in after climbing to the top of the trees in Wave; since they walked to the next floor of the chunnin exams together and confident it would be that way always…

Something warm and intimate and…

(You see, they always knew.)

“You belong to us!” Naruto is ranting, and Sasuke tilts his head and raises an eyebrow. “US! Konoha! I don’t CARE about what YOU want, because YOU have proven to have such a LOW IQ to deserve an opinion ANYWAY! You have no choice in the matter and blah blah blah blah FRIENDSHIP blah…”

Sakura slaps her forehead, while Kakashi tries to imagine he doesn’t actually know Naruto.

Epilogue

Fields of Gold by Sting

When it’s all over, as Naruto predicted, there’s many many many psychological-evaluations, Tsunade ordering that Orochimaru’s bite, being bits of the Snake Sannin’s power itself injected Sasuke’s mind with grief and ‘an inability to reason’ (or Naruto’s theory, permanent PMS—he was promptly met with the sight of Sasuke slowly and stiffly turning to glare at him with spinning eyes, to which Naruto finger-waved).

Tsunade just kept muttering ‘why me’ when she saw the documented profiles of three rogue ninjas entering Konoha then dared to look up, Suigetsu eying a priceless sword in her office. Tsunade wondered if there was time to bar Karin from the hospital and prison if she had a torture/experimentation relapse. She looked at the giant named Juugo gazing back at her blankly and thought she needed a drink.

Weeks later Sakura slumped against the table surface with her chin in her hand, debating the scene on the streets as she paid for her lunch break. Judging by Naruto’s foaming mouth (something about how Sasuke cheated on the third training ground because he knew Naruto hated snakes) and Sasuke’s glare as he held Naruto away from mauling him with a hand against his forehead (Naruto swiping at Sasuke fruitlessly like a third grader), Konoha was about to need some intervention if half the buildings wanted to be standing by noon.

“Why?” a voice cut in.

She blinked and looked up at Kiba’s questioning face.

“Why?” he repeated.

Why him? Why so much? Why so little? Why do you…why?

She smiled, and then slid off her seat on a wave.

Naruto was acting ten years old (but there was a grin peeking there that hadn’t been seen in years)…
Sasuke-kun was glaring (but there was a laugh peeking there that hadn’t been seen ever)…

But warm light reflections aside, now was not the time. She had…brothers, friends, loves (bonds)…to watch—they’re quite the handful, in love or not. She grabbed Kakashi-sensei by the collar as she passed the ramen stand—like hell was she doing this alone.

As for Kakashi-sensei, he only continued to turn a page of his new Icha Icha, vaguely amused at the pink-medic dragging him like a favorite rag doll towards the Terrible Two and leaving Kiba and the rest of Konoha unanswered.

She passed Sai on the street as he walked by, and their eyes met.

(Normal people wouldn’t understand.)

Sai did.

9) Once Time Skip happened, I started to want the old Team 7 back. I get mad everytime I see Sasuke's new team, and the new Team 7 just makes me long for what it was. If Kishimoto wants us to long for what used to be, then he's doing a good job.

5) The story really seems to be about brothers and rivals- Jiraiya & Orochimaru, Lee & Neji, Sakura & Ino, Kakashi & Obito. Theme wise, it makes sense that Naruto's priority was Sasuke. But it still pisses me off that Sakura and Naruto were apart for 2.5 years. Naruto should have been sending letters everyday! Sakura should have been thinking about skipping town and joining him! Just something, instead of the nothing we got!

I was going to comment earlier, but didn't for fear of saying something retarded and sentimental. Also, due to watching Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockhouse Orange", my attention was re-diverted from the Naruto fandom for a while. Sorry about that.

I love Team 7 and the music you chose was fitting (you features some of my favourite artists). Your drabbles were lovely and made me realise how much I've missed reading your work -- your Sakura is by far one of the most enjoyable and accurate I've read so far. Loved your version of the reunion, which will probably not happen that way in canon, but I like being delusional.

The friendship reminded me slightly of Anzu, but then again, I might be wrong: I stopped watched Yugi-oh years ago. Still, that line was deliciously amusing.

*giggles* You caught me. Yes it's Anzu, but Naruto's kind of creepily veering off the deep end into psycho-Jesus-cheerleader so I didn't find it too much of a stretch. Naruto's deeper in the closet than Sasuke is, and he's all about friendship and teamwork and I wanted to embarass Kakashi as much as possible in a "you taught this to him" way.

I'm in a rut because I'm writing my first sex scene and feel like a complete idiot. Ugh.
